I am reminded of the feeling I used to get in the pit of my stomach when a teacher told us we were going to read a book for the quarter. I hate to admit it but I hated to read.. books. Nothing was interesting enough, nothing much excited me, nothing held my attention and the thought of reading out loud in class terrified me. Would I stumble on my words, mispronounce something, read too fast, read too slow. Even to this day, I shrink in my seat when volunteers are called upon in a church lesson to read. I have even gone as far, about 6 years ago, to explain to the instructor that I did not want to read out loud so please don’t call on me. It’s funny, right after that I felt like a child again trying to get a pass and wondered if they thought I could not read at all. How pitiful..
Years have passed and some of my fears of the past are slowly fading away. Turns out I have a lot of them but I also understand that we all do but that is another post. This week I am celebrating with a group of women who have enjoyed reading monthly selections together for three years. We call ourselves the ladies who love books and have read a total of 29 books in three years. Entering our fourth year is not only amazing for the group… but personally, I’m amazed at how much pleasure I have gotten from the challenge. And while I have to admit that during the first two years, I was not as diligent as the others to finish anything. The group mildly teased but never wavered from their commitment to the club and thankfully, never kicked me out for non-compliance .LOL
Now I read everything am proud to say read other books along with the current monthly selection. I dreamed of a day when my bookshelf would be full of hard covered books staring back at me. Pretty ones that mildly looked alike, you know, the classics. I love how a well stocked home library looks and am drawn to them when I see one. But I wonder if those days are over and the electronic copies on our devices have forever replaced the hard copies we used to collect. Will libraries also become a thing of the past? I never thought Borders would close, but I too bought a devise and have not bought a hard covered book since. So the unfortunate part is that we perhaps have replaced our source for books but the silver lining is that we perhaps are reading more? I don’t know… I proud of myself and love my book club ladies and the books we have read. That is all.. now I read!
