18 years old and she was excited!.. The day had finally arrived and she was ready to get the party started. Nervous laughter filled the room between her and her mom, as she started to get dressed for her Debut. She said when she was a little girl she was a part of a cousin’s debut and had dreamed of her own fairytale affair ever since. She was to meet her court for photos shortly, so we finished up in the room and went downstairs to greet her friends. They were a bit nervous as well as they were to “represent” with JC on her big day. Carefully choreographed dances were all rehearsed and I must say… an awesome and impressive sight. The dance was elegant and appeared to be like a ballroom scene plucked straight out of a movie. How nice to see such a lovely display of friendship, respect, reverence, and discipline between her and her court…her friends. Later in the evening there were 18 women who through gentle laughter and tears expressed their wishes and love followed by 18 men, of all ages, who were chosen to give her a rose and dance with her, if but for a moment. After the speeches and birthday cake, the court changed clothes and performed a “Salsa” dance that had the crowd laughing, clapping and snapping their fingers to the penetrating beats….. LOVED IT!!!!! ….. and all the while there was a photo booth collecting snap-shots of the teens, recording their memories of the night. What fun that will be to look back over over when JC gets older…
Mrs C , Mr C and JC, I can not thank you enough for allowing me to capture this very special time in all of your lives. Yes, 18 is such a special age. I have learned a bit about Debut’s and am honored to have had the experience of documenting yours. JC… you are smart, beautiful, soft-spoken and kind with a determination that will take you wherever you want to go. May you continue to live young and free (yes… I do realize I left out wild) and remember……..YOLO! Stay on your path, you’ll go far.
